This is the exact English translation of a paper written in French between 2003 and 2006 and officially presented at the Faculty of Letters of Geneva University (Switzerland) on June 29th 2006. The original French version has an IDDN certificate (IDDN.CH.010.0106630.000.R.P.2006.035.31235), obtained on June 29th 2006, that brings a proof and a precise date of its creation.
The aim of this paper is to study what could correspond in our mind to the Ideas, the universals, the genus or the species using an hypothesis the author of this paper calls the generative holistic noetic theory (= GHN). This theory relates to the noetic theory insofar as it proposes a model of the activity of the mind while partly following the tradition of noetic researches of Graeco-Roman antiquity, Arab philosophy and the Western Middle Ages.
The aim of the GHN is to propose some solutions to problems set by noetic theory like the problem of abstraction. The GHN also tries to lie within the framework of contemporary research on holism carried out in fields like semantics, mathematics, physics or psychology. Finally, the GHN also tries to propose an explanation to the generative principle that one observes in many formal sciences, in particular in the generative grammars of Noam Chomsky, mathematics, etc.
The GHN, which uses the term "noema" to name the "thoughts", is based on the following principles presented on the original French version of June 29th 2006 :
- the noemas' generation within the intellect in a holistic way - the noemas' generation by the noemas in a holistic way - the heritage of properties by the generated noemas - "actual" and "potential" aspects that allows the noemas to fit the reality described by the sensory data thanks to tests - the study of causality on a noetical level - the composition of the noemas that allows to conceive complex thoughts.
Each one of these points, among others, are developed in the paper. The author also announces an analogy between the biological processes and the process of thought and brings an application of the theory to the study of the genus and species of Porphyry's "Introduction". Finally this paper proposes an explanation to the generative principle that one observes in many formal sciences, in particular in the generative grammars of Noam Chomsky, mathematics, etc. It also brings a noetic definition of the mathematical number.
